Children, Disasters and Development

Children and youth make up more than half of Pakistan's population. In any disaster situation they are among the most affected groups. The conventional and dominant perspective of looking at disasters take them as mere 'helpless victims'. This perspective does not take into account their capacities, skills and potentials that could otherwise be used for an effective disaster risk management.

This project aims to address this situation by bringing children at center of disaster risk management and development efforts in five selected districts: Layyah, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur (in Punjab) and Ghotki and Thatta (in Sindh).

Employing a multi-pronged strategy, children and their communities living in flood and cyclone prone areas; local governments and civil society organizations are being capacitated, as them being the primary stakeholders in any development and disaster risk management process.
